I am extremely patient and empathetic with my students.
I firstly chat with the student to understand their level and motivation.
Then, often together with the student, we will make a specific goal suited to
their individual needs (for example; making small talk with foreign coworkers
in the office/ booking a hotel room over the phone / politely turning down
a social invitation / answering questions for a customer service job interview etc.)
I will give some example sentences for them to repeat
(and have these written down to refer to.)
We will then make a dialogue as appropriate and
practice reading that before trying from memory.
Then substituting a few pieces of information.
Then we will take the same structure and target but apply a different set of
circumstances within the same context.
The student can feel comfortable talking freely for a short period of time with
the target structures and words they have just learned
referring to their written notes if needed.
We will practice this with a time limit multiple times.

I like to use a topic or context-based teaching style.
I set a topic for my lesson, and all my reading, speaking,
listening writing/grammar activities are based around that.
I also like to choose materials that are real life and
relevant and introduce different aspects of Western culture,
especially that of Australia.
As English has many different varieties,
I like to show students the differences there may be in pronunciation,
vocabulary, grammar and expressions in each variety of English.
Learning has to be fun as well, and students need some fun activities
to master new vocabulary, grammar or speaking skills, so I always make sure
I incorporate some sort of interesting and fun activity or game into my teaching.
